The Functional Living Method™
With Nicole
Somatic Educator · OA Instructor · HMS · Play Zone Pro Coach
For athletes, high achievers, physicians, and health-conscious adults whose breathing, movement, and nervous system patterns are quietly limiting recovery, performance, and ease. This is not therapy. It is not fitness. It is tailored 1:1 work that helps retrain chronic bracing, dysfunctional breathing, and stress physiology that no longer knows how to downshift.

Available in person in Branford, CT and online via secure video, for clients anywhere in the world.
You're doing everything right and your body still won't let go.
You stretch and it's tight again by afternoon. You sleep a full night and wake up unrestored. You can hold it together when you have to — and then you can't come down from it afterward. Recovery takes longer than it used to. The same side goes first, every time. The tension moves but never actually leaves. Nothing showed up on imaging. Nothing is technically wrong. You've just quietly built your life around it.
The bracing works, right up until it doesn't.
Holding tension is a skill, and you're good at it. It's how you got through the hard season, the long shifts, the years when getting it done mattered more than recovering from it.
Your system learned that staying half-defended was the safest way to operate — and it never got the signal that it could stop. So you're paying for it in the background.
Your breathing sits high in your chest all day and you don't notice until someone points it out.
You spend energy on guarding that you'd rather spend on living.
The same injury keeps returning to the same place, because the pattern underneath it was never addressed.
You can keep managing it.
Most people do, for years. It holds until the demands go up or the recovery slows down. Then it doesn't.
What actually wears on you isn't the tightness. It's the quiet suspicion that this is just your body now, and that you've already met the ceiling.
What you need isn't more effort. It's a nervous system that can let go of a pattern it no longer needs — and that's a skill you can learn
THREE DOORWAYS IN
What I teach is the ability to shift out of a state instead of getting stranded in one, to meet what a day asks of you and actually come back down afterward. It's the thing underneath all three of the doorways I work through. Breath builds it. Movement builds it. Nervous system capacity work builds it. Everything else is a route to the same place.

HONEST EXPECTATIONS
This work is not for everyone. Here’s how to know if it’s for you.
You’ve been through the conventional routes. Maybe some alternative ones too. Things helped for a while, then stopped. Or they never quite got to the thing underneath.
You’re not looking for someone to fix you.
You’re looking for someone to teach you how your own system works.
The people who get the most from this work are curious, honest with themselves, and willing to notice what’s actually happening rather than what they think should be happening.
They show up consistently.
They practice between sessions.
They understand that this is a skill they’re building, not a service they’re consuming.
If you’re looking for a quick fix or a passive experience, this isn’t the right fit — and I’d rather tell you that upfront than waste your time and money.
If any of this resonates, we should talk.
Who this work is for
Athletes who are always tight, under-recovered, or repeating the same injury patterns.
High achievers who can perform under pressure but cannot reliably come down from it.
Physicians and healthcare providers who hold the physical toll of the work in their necks, backs, and shoulders, and can't fully power down their nervous systems when the day ends.
People dealing with chronic tension, pain, fatigue, brain fog, or breathing patterns and injuries that have not fully resolved.
Why this works when stretching didn't.
Everything you've already tried was aimed at the tissue.
Lengthen the muscle, release the fascia, mobilize the joint. It works — for about as long as it takes your nervous system to put the tension back. Because the holding isn't coming from the muscle. It's an instruction being sent to the muscle, over and over, by a system that decided years ago it wasn't safe to stop.
You can’t stretch a muscle your brain is actively contracting all day long and it will be tight again by dinner.
So we work at the level the instruction is coming from.
Breath, because it's the one automatic function you can consciously override, and the fastest way in.
Movement, because your brain will update a pattern it can feel but not one it's been told about.
And direct nervous system capacity work, for the part of you that can't think its way out of where it's stuck.
Thomas Hanna called this Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) — the brain loses conscious access to a muscle it's holding, so you can't feel the contraction and you can't voluntarily release it. The muscle isn't short. It's on, and you've forgotten how to turn it off. That's why stretching it doesn't hold and why massage buys you an afternoon.
"To learn we need time, attention, and discrimination; to discriminate we must sense. This means that in order to learn we must sharpen our powers of sensing, and if we try and do most things by sheer force of will we shall achieve precisely the opposite of what we need."
- Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
YOUR PATH
We start where your system is — not where you think it should be.
You've been waiting for it to get bad enough to deal with.
It won't.
A pattern like has been developing for years, if not decades.
It just quietly narrows what you do—you blame aging and injuries.
You pace yourself through days that never used to need pacing. You blame aging and injuries again.
You build the workaround, and then you forget it was ever a workaround.
Another year of managing it and pushing harder at the gym
Another round of the thing that helped for six weeks.
The same warmup that takes longer than it used to—And again, you blame aging and injuries.
Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA)
There is no universal timeline and no guaranteed outcome. What there is — consistently — is a nervous system with more range, more resilience, and more choice.
WHAT BECOMES POSSIBLE
Not promises. Patterns.
Tension that finally releases
Faster recovery from stress
Breath that lands somewhere
Real-time body awareness
More usable energy and clearer focus
Custom 1:1 Engagements
Some clients need something more tailored than a standard session path. If you are an athlete returning to performance, a physician or healthcare provider navigating the demands of clinical work, or a high-achieving professional whose schedule and goals require a more customized structure, I offer 1:1 engagements built around your nervous system patterns, breathing mechanics, movement history, and real-life demands. Pricing and structure are discussed directly.

I don't post pricing here because what I'd recommend depends on where your system is starting from — a single session and a three-month container are very different commitments. We'll talk through the options on a free 15-minute call and you'll leave knowing exactly what it costs, with no pressure to book.
